Premier League matchday 4: Arsenal and City stay perfect, Leeds take Newcastle apart

Four rounds in, two clubs have won every match and they are the two everyone expected. Arsenal beat Sunderland 2–0 on Saturday evening and Manchester City won the derby at Old Trafford with ten men, so the top of the table reads twelve points apiece, separated by a single goal of difference. Below them, the round belonged to the sides nobody had in the top half: Leeds put four past Newcastle, Hull City took a point at Stamford Bridge to stay unbeaten, and Ipswich won at Selhurst Park. Ten matches, 29 goals, four red cards.

The results

Manchester United 0–1 Manchester City was the match of the weekend and it turned in the 23rd minute, when Phil Foden was sent off. City had six shots all afternoon to United's sixteen and 45 per cent of the ball, and it did not matter: Erling Haaland scored the only goal on the hour, his fourth of the season, which puts him alone at the top of the scoring chart. United had three shots on target and none of them went in.

Sunderland 0–2 Arsenal was goalless until the 56th minute, when Enzo Le Fée missed a penalty for the home side. Two minutes later Bruno Guimarães scored at the other end, set up by Declan Rice. Sunderland finished with ten after Reinildo was shown a red card in the sixth minute of stoppage time, and Bukayo Saka converted the penalty that followed for 2–0. Arsenal have conceded once in four matches.

Leeds 4–1 Newcastle was over by half-time. A Lewis Miley own goal in the 32nd minute started it; Jayden Bogle made it two from a Dominic Calvert-Lewin assist two minutes later; Calvert-Lewin scored the third himself on the stroke of half-time. Noah Okafor added a fourth on 59 minutes before Bazoumana Touré's stoppage-time reply. Leeds had scored three goals in their first three matches; they scored four in one evening.

Coventry 0–5 Brighton was the round's biggest score, and the second half did the damage. Charalampos Kostoulas opened it on 35 minutes from Pascal Groß's pass; Malick Yalcouyé made it two six minutes after the restart; Taiwo Awoniyi's red card on 53 minutes left Coventry with ten, and Groß from the penalty spot, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari in the fourth added minute finished it. Brighton have thirteen goals in four matches, more than anyone; Coventry have none, and no points.

Chelsea 2–2 Hull City started the way it was supposed to, Morgan Rogers scoring in the seventh minute from a João Pedro assist. Then Mohamed Belloumi scored twice in six minutes, on 28 and 34, and Hull led at the break at Stamford Bridge. João Pedro, from Cole Palmer's pass, levelled it on 66 minutes. Chelsea had 68 per cent of the ball and eleven corners; Hull had more shots. Hull are unbeaten, and fourth.

Crystal Palace 2–3 Ipswich had a red card too: Axel Disasi in the 34th minute, with Palace already pegged back from Anan Khalaili's opener by Emersonn. Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead on the stroke of half-time, Jörgen Strand Larsen equalised on 75, and Zian Flemming won it in the 90th minute. Palace have conceded eleven, the most in the division.

Aston Villa 1–2 Nottingham Forest was goalless at the interval and Forest scored straight after it, Liam Delap in the 46th minute from Murillo's pass. Alysson equalised for Villa on 74 minutes, set up by John McGinn, but Igor Jesus, from Morgan Gibbs-White, scored the winner two minutes from time. Forest had 22 shots to Villa's seven. Villa have one point from four.

Bournemouth 2–2 Brentford was two goals each way: Kevin Schade for Brentford on 34, Justin Kluivert for Bournemouth on 38, Marcus Tavernier from Evanilson's pass on 52, and Schade again on 56. Bournemouth had twenty shots and ten on target to Brentford's eight and two, and still could not win it. Bournemouth have drawn three of four and are still without a win; Brentford have drawn three of four and are still unbeaten.

Liverpool 0–0 Fulham and Tottenham 0–0 Everton were the goalless ones. Liverpool had fourteen shots and three on target at Anfield and have now drawn three of four; Fulham took a point but are still without a win. At Tottenham, the home side had 62 per cent of the ball and two shots on target, and have yet to score a league goal this season: no goals in four matches, two points.

Arsenal and City are the only unbeaten sides with four wins; Leeds, Hull, Brentford, Liverpool and Everton are unbeaten without being so quick about it. Five clubs — Bournemouth, Tottenham, Fulham, Aston Villa and Coventry — are still waiting for a first win, and two of them, Tottenham and Coventry, are still waiting for a first goal.

Numbers to know

• Haaland leads the scoring with four. Seven players have three: João Pedro and Morgan Rogers of Chelsea, Alexander Isak, Marcus Tavernier, Kevin Schade, Bruno Fernandes and Bukayo Saka. João Pedro also has three assists.
• Brighton's thirteen goals are three more than the next best, Chelsea's ten. Coventry have conceded ten and scored none.
• Four red cards in one round — Foden, Disasi, Awoniyi and Reinildo — and only one of the four ten-man sides, Manchester City, won.
