Bundesliga matchday 4 preview: Freiburg at Frankfurt, Dortmund at Stuttgart, Bayern open against Union

The two sides with three wins from three both go away on Saturday, and neither trip is easy. SC Freiburg, who have conceded once, go to Eintracht Frankfurt, who have not lost to them in the last five meetings; Borussia Dortmund go to Stuttgart, who have beaten them in three of the last five. Bayern München, fourth after their 2–1 at Elversberg, open the round on Friday at home to Union Berlin. At the bottom, Hamburg and Gladbach — no points, twelve conceded each — are both at home, to Köln and Mainz.

Friday

Bayern München v Union Berlin (18:30 UTC, Allianz Arena). Bayern have seven points from three; Union have one, and have conceded ten. Bayern are unbeaten in the last five meetings and won the last two, 4–0 here in March and 3–2 in the cup in December; the two before that were draws at Union.

Saturday

Eintracht Frankfurt v SC Freiburg (13:30 UTC, Deutsche Bank Park). Freiburg lead on goal difference with ten scored and one conceded; Frankfurt, ninth on four, won 3–1 at Mainz. The head-to-head is Frankfurt's: unbeaten in the last five, with wins of 2–0 in March, 3–1 at Freiburg in May 2025 and 4–1 here in January 2025.

Hamburger SV v 1. FC Köln (13:30 UTC, Volksparkstadion). Hamburg have lost all three, conceded twelve and scored none; Köln are twelfth on four. The last meeting was 1–1 in March; Köln won 4–1 in November. In the second division the season before, Hamburg won both.

Werder Bremen v FC Augsburg (13:30 UTC, Weser-Stadion). Augsburg are third and unbeaten — two wins, a draw — after coming from behind to draw with Leverkusen; Bremen are tenth on four. Augsburg are unbeaten in the last four meetings and won 3–1 here in May and 2–0 here in January 2025.

Borussia Mönchengladbach v FSV Mainz 05 (13:30 UTC, Borussia-Park). Gladbach have no points and conceded twelve, five of them at Freiburg with ten men; Mainz are eighth on four. Three of the last five meetings were 1–1; Gladbach won 1–0 at Mainz in December, Mainz 3–1 here in March 2025.

VfB Stuttgart v Borussia Dortmund (16:30 UTC, MHP Arena). Dortmund have three wins and eight goals; Stuttgart, fourteenth on three, lost 2–1 at Hoffenheim. Stuttgart have won three of the last five meetings, including 5–1 here in September 2024 and 2–1 and 1–0 at Dortmund — but Dortmund won the most recent visit, 2–0 in April.

Sunday

Bayer Leverkusen v RB Leipzig (13:30 UTC, BayArena). Leipzig, fifth on six, put five past Hamburg; Leverkusen, seventh on four, drew at Augsburg with thirty shots. Leverkusen have won the last two meetings, 4–1 here in May and 3–1 at Leipzig in December, and are unbeaten in the last three.

FC Schalke 04 v SV Elversberg (15:30 UTC, Veltins-Arena). Both promoted; Elversberg are sixth on six after two wins, Schalke eleventh on four after winning at Union. In the second division Schalke won three of the last five meetings, including 2–1 at Elversberg in April.

SC Paderborn 07 v 1899 Hoffenheim (17:30 UTC, Home Deluxe Arena). Paderborn have a point and no goals; Hoffenheim, thirteenth on three, beat Stuttgart with two from Adam Hložek. Paderborn have never beaten Hoffenheim in four league meetings — two draws, two Hoffenheim wins, the last 1–1 in May 2020.

Bayern win on Friday and they are top overnight on ten; Freiburg and Dortmund need wins on Saturday to go back past them. Augsburg can join them on ten with a win at Bremen. At the bottom, Hamburg and Gladbach both have a first point to play for at home.
